Our residents will be the first to tell you that Denver is one of the best cities to spend your golden years in. Perfectly warm summers and beautiful snowy winters, mountain range views unlike anything in the country, and that crisp, fresh air are just a few of the things our seniors love.

But what about when it comes time to get out and do something fun? The staff at Montage Heights worked to compile this list of some of our favorite activities for seniors in Denver.

Disclaimer: As we all know, 2020 has been an unprecedented year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the following activities and locations are not currently available because of measures put in place to keep us all safe. Please call ahead to any of the below recommendations to confirm that they are open to visitors.

Visit a park or go on a hike

Nothing says “Denver, Colorado” quite like taking in the mountain air. That’s why we decided to start this list with our seniors’ favorite parks and hikes in Denver.

1. Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Only a short hour drive away from Denver, this gorgeous slice of the outdoors has over 40 miles of hiking trails, several of which are rated Easy by

2. Red Rocks Park

Just west of Denver is the world-famous Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre. Hiking around the beautiful red rocks and concert amphitheatre is an easy way to see the area’s natural beauty.

3. Washington Park

A little closer to home for our residents at Montage Heights, Washington Park is one of Denverites’ favorite city parks. With two lakes, two flower gardens, and over 155 acres, there’s a little something for every senior here.

4. Denver Botanic Gardens

The gardens are one of the crown jewels of the Mile High City. Spanning 24 acres, the wide variety of flowers and plants from all over the world are truly breathtaking.
Price: $11.50 for seniors (65 and older)

Experience culture at a museum

When it’s too cold to be outside, museums are the perfect place to spend a day!

5. Denver Art Museum

One of the largest art museums west of the Mississippi, the DAM is constantly providing the city with new exhibitions and collections.
Price: $8 for seniors (65 and older)


6. Denver Museum of Nature & Science

Learn about the millions of years of natural history that slowly created the beautiful Rocky Mountains around us. This is also a great place to spend a day with grandkids!
Price: $16.95 for seniors (65 and older)


7. City of Denver Classes & Activities

The City of Denver website lists out several great activities for Active Older Adults. These are a great way to get out, stay active in the community, and meet some new people! We’ve selected just a couple to highlight:

  • Pickleball – According to the Pickleball USA website, “pickleball is a paddle sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong and is also fun, social, and friendly.” There are nearly 20 parks and recreation centers in Denver that offer pickleball games!
  • SilverSneakers® is an exercise program for seniors that may be free for you depending on your health insurance! Play sports, do yoga, or get in a good workout.
